What is Scalp Micropigmentation?
One of the newest trends in male pattern baldness treatments is scalp micropigmentation. But what exactly is scalp micropigmentation? And how does it work? Skin and Scalp Restoration Clinic in Dayton will detail what scalp micropigmentation is and how it works. Contact us today for a free consultation!
WHAT IS SCALP MICROPIGMENTATION?
Scalp micropigmentation is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that uses microneedles to insert pigment into the scalp — specifically into the lower layers of your skin. Microneedling is a process that typically uses a microneedling pen to create tiny holes in your skin to achieve certain desired results, such as remedying the appearance of your scalp. The result of scalp micropigmentation is the hair follicles now make your head look full with hair. This procedure is great for those suffering from male pattern baldness, minor thinning of the hair, or recession of the hair.
WHAT DOES A SCALP MICROPIGMENTATION TREATMENT LOOK LIKE?
While similar to tattooing, a scalp micropigmentation treatment is done by a trained professional whose goal is to mimic hair. The tiny dots of pigment are placed in the dermal layer of skin to create an illusion of a full head of shaved hair. At your scalp micropigmentation consultation, your practitioner will explain the process and determine what looks best for you.
Microneedles work by creating tiny injuries in your skin where the pigment is placed. A scab will form over this injury and will take some of the pigment with it. Your body, sensing the presence of a foreign substance, will also send your immune system to attack the pigment, removing more of it from your skin. This necessitates several follow-up treatments to calm the fading effect.
The pigments for scalp micropigmentation are completely customizable to your hair color. In fact, usually different shades are applied, with the lighter ones first and then the darker ones in subsequent scalp micropigmentation sessions.
HOW LONG IS A SCALP MICROPIGMENTATION SESSION?
Similar to a tattoo session, expect the first scalp micropigmentation session to last anywhere from three to five hours. Additional sessions will usually not take as long, as the correct blend, density, and darkness levels are fine-tuned.
While it is most common for scalp micropigmentation to be used to treat male pattern baldness, this method can treat other conditions as well. Some uses include covering scars or blemishes, burns, surgery, or even hair transplant scars. Birthmarks can even be blended into the scalp.
WHAT IS THE DOWNTIME OF SCALP MICROPIGMENTATION?
There is very little downtime. Most patients return to work the next day. You’ll notice slight redness on the skin, which can last a day or two afterward, but you’ll be ready for your next session in as little as seven days. Scalp micropigmentation, while slightly discomforting, is much less painful than a regular tattoo and a hair transplant. You can usually choose to have a topical anaesthetic applied as well if you so desire.
WHAT IS THE AFTERCARE FOR A SCALP MICROPIGMENTATION TREATMENT?
After your scalp micropigmentation treatment, you should be careful to let your scabs heal. Thus, you’ll want to avoid washing your hair for a few days, as well as engaging in activities that could cause you to sweat. Once your scabs have fully healed and fallen off, can you begin to shave again. In most cases, scalp micropigmentation lasts between four and six years before the pigment fades to the point it’s hardly seen.
